Still Alive and Kicking (and Writing about Zines and Comics)

It's been a while since I've posted here. I'm still alive! I have a webcomic now; it went live a few months ago at www.XochitlAndNemo.com. Tonight I posted a blog entry there about the zines and comics I made over 10 years ago. Included are some pics of the first zine I made (with some help). You can read the post here. It's the first post in a series, in which I'll be highlighting some of those zines' contents that still hold up (to me at least) after all this time.

I'm not sure what the future of this blog will be. It might continue to be something like this--a place to post updates for other places while I continue to have a LiveJournal account for lurking and commenting on other LiveJournalers' blogs. =) I would like to think that I'll post some comics and sketches here too. I hope so! But if not, I will at least link to such posts on my other sites.

Day 17, okay?

babies are crafty creatures who use their big eyes to attract otherwise jaded "big'uns" aka adults. use caution around big-eyed babies!

i fell off the wagon for this 30-day doodle thing. i think i did okay though. it helped me figure out what i did and didn't want to do in the future, drawing-wise and otherwise.

i'm tired of my webcomic, violence, too. i have a page that i did a month ago that i just haven't posted. i'm not sure if i should give up on the story or finish it. probably finish it. i started drawing it before i had the whole story written out, and really it's only been through one small revision after the first draft. if i do finish it (which i would like to do btw), i think i need to go back and write a more detailed script, so i have a better idea of exactly how many pages are left. i do know it's basically a short story; 20-30 pages.

Days 13, 14, x, 16

Day 16 - This was as much as I could do before she moved her head. She was asleep so I had quite a lot of time, which was nice.

Day 15 - x

Day 14 - Corduroy suit!

Day 6, 7, x, 9, 10, 11, 12, + Original Days 1 & 2

I've been doing my daily doodles, but it's a bit harder to post them every day too. Gonna try to get closer to once-a-day posts, though.

Day 12 - Disclaimer: Any weird hand placements are totally by accident and largely to do with me just throwing limbs around when I draw from imagination!

Day 11 - "Attempting to Quiet the Late-Night Crying Jag" - Mari, tired, trying to comfort Xochitl at bedtime. They moved a lot, so it was hard to draw them. Tried to get information down quickly.

Day 10 - my mom and sister have been visiting since last Saturday. Top drawing is my sis. Bottom drawing is Mari; it's almost a good likeness. :P

Day 9

Day 8

x - I missed this day.

Day 7

Day 6

Original Days 1 & 2

Found my little sketchbook. Original Day 1:

Original Day 2 - the portrait is of my friend Allen.

Day 5

Partially inspired by the Princess Leia girl on American Idol tonight.

Day 4

So you see I posted this the day after. But I drew it last night before I went to bed! Ha ha! You cannot outwit me!

"Day 1"

Hmm, I seem to have (temporarily, I hope) lost that cute little sketchbook. So until I find it, we'll pretend that today is day 1 of the 30 Days of Doodles.

This is my baby girl Xochitl. She's a little over a month and a half old. She's Mari and I's first child.

She looks a little too skinny around the middle in this drawing. She's not actually skinny.

30 Days of Doodles

So I bought this tiny little sketchbook today, cuz I thought I could do a sketch a day in it for 30 days or so and post 'em, and it wouldn't be too overwhelming or anything for me, since its SO DANG SMALL! I've done my first sketch already, and I have to say, the paper sucks if you're going to erase. It's way too soft.

But anyways, yeah, the idea is that it won't be psychologically overwhelming and it'll be good practice, and fun for people to look at.

I'm not at home; when i get there in a few hours I'll post the first sketch.

"Yo, Fuck Craig Thompson!"

Now that I've got your attention so cynically with that provocative title, let me explain. Well, just read the comic to see what I mean...

Yeah, it's a joke. That male person guy in the comic bearing no relation whatsoever to yours truly (cough cough) and that female person guy in the comic bearing no relation to my girlfriend (cough cough), we both like both of the authors mentioned in the strip.

And thus ends what you might view as the most pathetic version of name-dropping ever, given as I don't personally know either of the people whose names I've dropped by posting this.

Ahem. Nonetheless, they do great work.

Shame Pt. 2 (A Collaborative Effort)

I love what Chris did with this comic. I did the pics first, then he added the words (and the shoes).

I must defeat my brother

My friend helped me realize this tonight. I was telling him how my brother got a nice IKEA bedframe for free from some friends and how he got to stay in an apartment, at a discount, whose interior had been designed by an architect. In a separate story, I told my friend how my brother's dog once bit my hand and it hurt like hell for weeks.

My friend said, Man, he got a free IKEA bed, he has a nice apartment, his dog bit your hand--you need to start a rivalry or something.

It's begun, brother.
